Korean Medicine Clinical Practice Guideline for Deforming Dorsopathies (Scoliosis)

Background and purpose

Scoliosis is a deformity of the spine commonly encountered in the primary clinical setting. The patients are increasingly seeking for treatment to correct the imbalance and the asymmetry of their spine and body. However, as there are insufficient clinical guidelines for Korean medicine treatment of deforming dorsopathies (scoliosis), the committee agreed on the need for the development of Korean medicine Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG). This CPG implemented the most valid evidence at the time of development and holds the purpose of assisting clinicians to make objective judgments when treating scoliosis.

Overview

Scoliosis is by abnormal lateral curvature or deviation of spine from the vertical body axis. Scoliosis is a three-dimensional deformity, with the rotation of the vertebral body in the coronal plane, often coupled with sagittal spinal curvature disruption. There are two categories for scoliosis: structural scoliosis and non-structural scoliosis, also known as functional scoliosis. Treatment options in conventional therapy include bracing, physical therapy and surgery. Korean medicine therapy applies acupuncture, herbal medicine, chuna therapy and daoyin exercise therapy.
