1. Background and purpose
According to the Health Insurance Statistical Yearbook of 2017, ankle sprain was the fifth most common reason for visits to Korean Medicine clinics, and 998,066 Korean ankle-sprain patients received the Korean Medicine treatments. therefore, we developed Korean Medicine clinical practice guidelines (KMCPG) for the Korean Medicine treatments of ankle sprain using evidence-based methodology such as systematic literature review and meta-analysis. this guideline will help Korean Medicine practitioners establish an ankle sprain treatment plan and make decisions for patients with ankle sprain, and it will provide effective and standardized care for patients with ankle sprain.
2. Disease overview
Ankle sprain is one of the most frequently encountered musculoskeletal injuries. Acute ankle sprain is an acute injury of one or more of the ankle ligaments due to exercise or strong external impacts. this guideline targets adult patients with ankle sprain which is lateral ligament, medial ligament, and tibiofibular syndesmosis injury.
